Lighthouse Dragon Boat Team Release

The Lighthouse of Houston and and Taping for the Blind are collaborating to recruit visually impaired youth ages 12-18 years of age to participate in the October Gulf Coast Dragon Boat Regatta in Clear Lake.

“We have 12 paddlers and are very pleased with the response we received from the community,” says Michelle Colvard, team coordinator. “This is a great team-building sport and you don’t have to be athletic to participate.”

This will be Colvard’s second competition. She is a member of the Mayor’s Wellness Council and a chairperson for the Houston Commission on Disabilities.

“Dragon Boat racing is becoming more and more popular along the Gulf Coast,” says Houston Heat Coach Albert Wong. “Over the past two years, the community has really embraced the sport. We now have several breast cancer survivor teams and hope to expand our community outreach.”

For more information on how to participate, contact Michelle Colvard 832-824-4651 or Shelegh Morane at the Lighthouse of Houston at 713-284-8490.

The Texas Dragon Boat Association (TDBA) presents its 3rd Annual Gulf Coast International Dragon Boat Regatta Oct. 21-22 at Clear Lake Park.

Teams from across North America will compete for the revered Dragon Cup.  Saturday’s schedule features corporate and community teams.  Youth and breast cancer survivor teams will compete on Sunday.  Spectators and participants of this free public event celebrate Asian culture as they enjoy diverse food, music and entertainment.
