FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
8th Annual Dragon Boat Festival Launches Saturday, May 3, 2008
Free downtown event treats public to a day of competition, art and culture
HOUSTON, January 30, 2008 – The Texas Dragon Boat Association (TDBA) is pleased to announce James and Jenny Ko Calaway
as the Honorary Co-Chairs of the 2008 Houston Dragon Boat Festival. “We’re delighted to have been selected by the Texas Dragon Boat Association to kick off this year’s event. It’s very exciting to see the cultural tradition of dragon boating gain popularity with participants as well as onlookers. We hope that everyone will come out and support the teams during a day filled with competition, culture, and family fun.
TDBA, in collaboration with Buffalo Bayou Partnership, presents its 8th annual Houston Dragon Boat Festival on the first Saturday of May. The daylong festival showcases teams comprised of corporate, community, and cause-related groups competing in multiple heats to vie for the coveted Dragon Cup.
Each May, thousands of spectators line the banks of Buffalo Bayou at Allen’s Landing in downtown Houston to root for their favorite team, which consists of 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steersperson. Attendees are also entertained by a multitude of cultural and music performances and may sample diverse fare from local restaurateurs and other vendors.
In addition to the May Festival, TDBA also holds a Regatta in Bay Area Houston every October. TDBA is planning a boathouse to facilitate a year-round corporate and community teambuilding program, youth boating education program, and breast cancer survivor program.
